biography

Trofenik was born in the Lower Styrian town of Marburg (now Maribor in Slovenia ). After high school he studied at the University in Ljubljana / Laibach first Jura , then at Franz Weber (France Veber) philosophy and classical philology . He completed his studies with a doctorate in both areas and then qualified as a lecturer in criminal law. At the law faculty of this university, he worked as a private lecturer until his dismissal for ideological reasons by the communist regime in February 1946. Rudolf Trofenik was now under political quarantine in Yugoslavia for ten years until he managed to legally move to the Federal Republic in 1956 To leave Germany.

He settled in Munich and began building a new life under difficult conditions. At first he was scientifically active, published his own articles in Southeastern European publications and traded in antiquarian books. Later he founded the publishing house Dr. Dr. Rudolf Trofenik and specialized in the printing of older writings from the German and Slovenian language area about the history and culture of the Slovenes and southern Slavs . In addition, magazines and series of publications appeared in his publishing house, which dealt with special topics of the Southeast European region from Hungary in the north to the Bosporus in the south.

Naturally, the books he published could not achieve large print runs because the market was too small, and the libraries and private individuals in Southeastern Europe who were interested were mostly unable to raise the foreign currency amounts at the time. Nevertheless, Southeast European science owed a great deal to the idealistic commitment of this publisher, which was also recognized by the award of the Federal Cross of Merit.

Rudolf Trofenik lived to see his Slovenian homeland striving for independence and took an active part in it. On December 7, 1991, at the age of 80, he died in the Bavarian capital and was buried on December 13, 1991 in Munich's north cemetery.
