location

It is located in an industrial park in the Rothensee district of Magdeburg at Bülstringer Straße 20.

Architecture and history

The single-storey residential building was built in 1927 in preparation for the German theater exhibition in 1928 on the exhibition grounds in Rotehornpark as a test house and exhibition building. The planning of the house was carried out by the municipal building department of the city of Magdeburg, the design comes from the city building officer Johannes Göderitz with Fritz Kneller collaborating. The construction was carried out as a thermal construction in an experimental prefabricated construction based on a system from AC Pohlmann. Pre-fabricated wooden parts were used, which are clad with panels made of asbestos slate. The building is covered with a flat roof, which protrudes very flat and is structured horizontally. There is a horizontal band of windows on one side . On the opposite side there is a small open corner loggia. The living space is raised by a skylight .

After the end of the theater exhibition, the building was moved to Oststraße 7b in the Werder district in a corner location on Weidenstraße that characterizes the street scene. In the 2010s, it was moved again to the current location.

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 06380 .

The building is considered to be an important testimony to the New Building and is interesting in terms of architectural history as a pioneer building of the standardized, energy and material-saving prefabricated construction method. The building is part of contemporary housing policy and should be seen in connection with similar experiments such as the steel house in Dessau . In terms of urban history, it is also an expression of the competition between Magdeburg and Dessau as centers of new building.
