history

Edward Cornwalls arrived in Nova Scotia in 1749 under orders from the English government to establish a military facility and a population of 4,000 soldiers on the peninsula. Halifax quickly emerged as strategically valuable to the British government and its allies.

A total of seven military fortifications were built: Chain Rock, Chain Battery, Point Pleasant Battery, Northwest Arm Battery, Fort Ogilvie, Prince of Wales Tower and Cambridge Battery. Many of these systems have been rebuilt or restored and some are more than 200 years old. The first protective devices were erected in 1762.

Chain Battery and Chain Rock were fortifications designed to secure the north-western area. In contrast to other facilities, these were not rebuilt and are now in the same condition as they were left behind.

In 1929 many soldiers left the positions and did not return until the beginning of the Second World War in 1938. The Martello Tower played an important role during the war, as did the numerous other fortifications and security systems on the site until the end of the war. The Fort Ogilvie and the Cambridge Battery were upgraded and expanded and equipped with modern weapons. One of these cannons is still on display in Fort Ogilvie .
