Game of the year 2009: recommendation list

Poison is a card game by Reiner Knizia for 3 to 6 players , released in 2008, with a playing time of around 45 minutes. The recommended age is 8 years. It was published by Amigo . The players take on the role of a magician whose goal is to produce as few poisoned potions as possible.

Game material

The game consists of 50 cards of different suits and values. There are fourteen colors of red, blue and violet, each of which has the value one , two , five and seven three times and the value four occurs twice . These cards are called Potions Cards . There are also green cards, all of which have a value of four and are called poison cards . A notepad with a printed table is available for the notation of the score.

Game flow

The game has as many rounds as there are players involved, so that each player is the dealer exactly once. At the beginning of each round, all cards are shuffled and evenly distributed clockwise and placed face down in hand. The game is played clockwise, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

There are three stacks of cards, initially empty, on the gaming table, each representing a potion kettle in one of the three colors. The players each have to place one of their hand cards, the potions, face up on a suitable pile, i.e. fill the cauldron. However, green poison potions can be placed in any cauldron. A cauldron is full when the card total reaches thirteen . The player who causes a cauldron to overflow must take the cards from the cauldron face down, but not the card that caused the cauldron to overflow.

When all players have placed all their cards, the counting phase begins. Each player counts how many cards of each color he has in his face-down pile. Each poison card counts two minus points, each potion card counts one minus point, the value of the cards no longer plays a role here. However, the player with the most potion cards of one color does not receive any negative points. Poison, on the other hand, always counts twice as negative, no matter how much a player has collected. If two players have most cards of the same suit (i.e. the same number), both get minus points. Each player's minus points are recorded and the next round begins, with the next player in the round being the dealer.

If every player was once the dealer, all minus points of the individual players are added up. The player with the fewest negative points wins the game.
