Political state of Germany in the beginning of the 16th century (it. = Rapporto delle Cose d'Alemagna ) is one of the three reports that Niccolò Machiavelli wrote after a diplomatic mission to Emperor Maximilian I in 1508 for the Republic of Florence.

He published a revised version of the report in 1513 under the title Ritratto delle cose della Magna . Machiavelli's explanations are supplemented by a portrait of the emperor ( Über den Kaiser Maximilian , 1509).

Historical background

Machiavelli traveled to the court of Emperor Maximilian I in December 1507 on behalf of the Republic of Florence to support the Florentine envoy Francesco Vettori and stayed in Tyrol, Innsbruck, Trento and Bolzano until June 1508. The reason was Maximilian's intention to be crowned by the Pope in the tradition of German emperors in Italy. The Florentine delegation was supposed to sound out to what extent the ideas of the emperor with regard to financial, political and military support from Florence went and to suppress the emperor's demands for tribute as far as possible in the negotiations.

On February 4th, 1508 Maximilian was proclaimed Elected Roman Emperor in the Cathedral of Trento . As a result, no more German emperors were crowned in Rome .
