The official name of the central police authority in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is "Polis Genel Müdürlüğü" ( German  General Directorate of the Police ). The Turkish Cypriot Police are organized centrally, but are subordinate to the armed forces of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . It is also subordinate to the Prime Minister's Office and is responsible for all police tasks including traffic monitoring.

History and structure

The predecessor organization of today's police force was founded in 1964. The current police law of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has the number 51/1984 and dates from 1984. In the constituent assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, its police were declared the official police authority on November 4, 1984 by decision of President Rauf Denktaş .

After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the Turkish Cypriot police were equipped with enough new vehicles. According to their own statements, a total of 40 members died in fighting between the EOKA and the Turkish Cypriot police.

Function and Mission

The regular police are divided into the "protection police" and the "criminal police" according to their different areas of responsibility.

In the official description of the tasks, the main focus is on basic security, the protection of the population, the fight against crime, including that of children and young people, as well as the use of statistics to achieve these goals. The population's trust in the police is also a goal.
