"Polkagrisar" in Gränna

Polkagrisar ( Swedish for polka pigs) are candy cane sweets that are a specialty of Swedish food production.

Amalia Eriksson , a 35-year-old widow from Gränna , received permission in 1859 to open a bakery and also make candy canes there. It is unclear where she got the recipe from. Gränna has remained the center of production for Polkagrisar to this day and you can follow the production process by visiting one of the numerous workshops.

Traditional polkagris

The traditional candy canes are red and white striped and have a peppermint flavor . But there are also bars in numerous other colors and flavors.

The name Polkagrisar probably comes from the dance polka , which at that time spread across Europe. Every year in June there is a dance festival in Gränna, which also includes competitions in polka dancing.
