Polruan ( Cornish : Porthruan ) is a small fishing village on the south coast of the county of Cornwall in southwest England . The village is a district of the Civil parish Lanteglos-by-Fowey and is opposite Fowey on the east bank of the mouth of the Fowey River in the English Channel . To the north it borders the bay of the Pont Pill , so that the village is surrounded by water on three sides. It can only be reached by road from the east or by passenger ferry from Fowey. There is only a narrow road through the village, on the river side it drops steeply with numerous small alleys and stairs.

Polruan is an old fishing village with a long tradition of boat building, today there is still a boat building company in the village. The ruins of the St Savior Chapel on the top of the hill above the village date back to the 13th century. In the 14th or 15th centuries, the Polruan Blockhouse was built at the head of the headland to protect Fowey Harbor. In the 18th century the village was an important port for exporting fish. Today, despite its remote location, it is a popular vacation spot and a popular marina.
