The Polyball is a traditional festival event at ETH Zurich . It takes place every year at the end of November and is a classic ball .

General

history

The exact dating of the first polyball is unknown. It is believed to have been practiced since the 1880s. Until 1927 the ball was known as the academy and was subject to a charitable purpose. Since the 1950s, a separate motto has also been developed for each ball and the rooms have been decorated accordingly.

In the course of time, the ball often changed its location. The locations were the Zurich Tonhalle, the Grand Hotel Dolder , the Zurich exhibition grounds and the main building of the ETH. The latter has been the venue for over 30 years and will probably remain so in the future.

Since 2005 there has been a book on the history of the polyball: The most beautiful decoration is the audience. Pictures and stories from over 100 years of Polyball.

procedure

As mentioned above, the Polyball will be held in the main and multi-purpose buildings of the ETH. Admission begins on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., the ball itself lasts until 5:00 a.m. on Sundays. 16 to 20 halls decorated according to the ball motto are available to ball guests. Depending on the size of the individual halls, all kinds of bands , from street musicians to full-blown ball orchestras, provide the musical background for those who love to dance. An average of 9,000 guests attend the ball.

organization

The ball is organized by the KOSTA Foundation, a recognized organization of the VSETH . Members of KOSTA are students from ETH and the University of Zurich, after the ball was previously only organized by ETH students. The sponsorship of the ball is taken over by the magnificence .
