Toni Schneider-Manzell
Toni Schneider-Manzell (born February 22, 1911 in Manzell near Friedrichshafen , † November 7, 1996 in Rosenheim , Upper Bavaria) was a German - Austrian sculptor .
biography
Toni Schneider, who later added the name of his place of birth to his personal name, attended the Munich Academy and then worked on it in Ascona in Ticino, Switzerland . In 1944 he moved to Austria, initially to Weitwörth near Salzburg and in 1955 to Salzburg itself. There he created the gate (of faith), the pulpit and the lid of the baptismal font of Salzburg Cathedral . He was one of the circle of acquaintances of the director Hans Conrad Fischer and his daughter Nela, a painter who died young, with whom he maintained a lively artistic exchange in Salzburg, especially after her illness.
Schneider-Manzell was known for the cultivation of ancient statuary, a sensitive surface treatment of bronze , to expressive qualities of the restrained, internalized, dreamy and humble. This is particularly evident in his reliefs , small sculptures and portrait heads , which are treated in a painterly manner to the point of sketchiness . The same noble handling of traditions , which can coexist with venerable works of the past, predestined Schneider-Manzell to be the leading sacral sculptor in German-speaking countries. His best-known works include the cathedral doors and the Way of the Cross in Essen (1978–1980) and Speyer (1967–1971), the monuments to Julius Raab in Vienna (1967), Cardinal Galen in Münster (1978) and Graf Zeppelin (1985) as well the Traklbrunnen (1957) and the "Vinzentinerin" (1986) in Salzburg.
