The Polycomputer 880 was a learning computer based on the U880 microprocessor that was widely used in the GDR . The computer was produced from 1983 by the state-owned company VEB Polytechnik Karl-Marx-Stadt for use as a learning machine in general schools and higher educational institutions.

The device was delivered ready for use in a diplomatic case (48 × 38 × 12 cm) and had a total weight of 5 kg. The polycomputer had a hexadecimal keyboard and some function keys for entering data . The output was via an 8-digit seven-segment display . The status of all lines of the data and address bus could be read off via light emitting diodes . The operating system of the polycomputer was on a 4 Kbyte ROM , 1 Kbyte of RAM was provided for data storage. Due to the incomplete address decoding, it was not possible to upgrade to a full 64 KByte memory. A cassette tape recorder could be connected via a DIN socket for external data storage . A teleprinter could be connected via a loudspeaker connector for printing . A driver for the loop current of the teletype was already built in. The data buses were accessible via a connector. Thus numerous handicraft objects for accessories could be realized. Internally there was a socket for a further ROM or EPROM . For price reasons, a second choice variant of the U880 CPU with only 1 MHz clock frequency was used as the processor .

The scope of delivery also included an operating manual, a system manual and a workbook. In 1984 the new price was 3,449 marks . At the same time, the single-board computer LC80 was on the market.
