Polydrusus formosus syn. Polydrusus sericeus , also known as the silky gloss weevil , is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae). It belongs to the group of so-called green weevils .

features

The oval-elongated beetles are 5.1–7 mm long. The actually black beetles are covered with dense green, shiny scales. The eyes are relatively large. The antennae and legs are colored red-yellow. The antenna lobe is black. The trunk is slightly widened towards the tip. The femora each have an inconspicuous tooth. Clearly visible dark longitudinal furrows run over the wing covers .

distribution

The beetle species is native to the western Palearctic . Their occurrence extends over large parts of Europe. It extends in the north to southern Scandinavia and also includes the British Isles . In the south it extends into the western Mediterranean area. The species was introduced in North America.

Way of life

The beetles are observed from April to August. The beetle species is considered polyphagous . The beetles can be found on various deciduous trees and shrubs. In North America, the species particularly uses the yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis ) as a fodder plant. The larvae feed on the roots of their host plants. Their development will be completed in autumn. They hibernate in the ground and only pupate in spring.

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Mayer in 1779 as Curculio formosus . In the literature, the species is assigned to different subgenera: Chrysoyphis , Eudipnus , Neodrosus and Thomsoneonymus . A common synonym of the species is Polydrus sericeus Schaller , 1783 non Goeze , 1777.
