It was founded in 1986 by Stephen Layton , at that time still a student at King's College, Cambridge , for a concert at King's College Chapel and has since made a name for itself around the world through recordings and critically acclaimed concerts.

The performances, which are sold out every year, are counted among the most important music events in London and have already been broadcast on the BBC and EBU . The Evening Standard praised the interpretation of Handel's Messiah by the choir; year after year no one succeeds better than Polyphony .

Polyphony has also received several critical acclaim for its recordings . His interpretation of Benjamin Britten's Sacred And Profane won a Gramophone Award and the Diapason d'or for 2001. In 2004, the first recording of various works by Arvo Pärt under the title Tridodion was chosen as best in the Choral category of the Gramophone Awards.
