Polysome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A polysome or polyribosome is the term used to describe the alignment of many ribosomes on the mRNA to be translated during protein synthesis in the cytoplasm . The ribosomes are either free in the cytoplasm or are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) so that the finished protein is channeled into the ER during the translation process. Polysomes are the expression of the mechanism of translation in which the same mRNA is read several times, practically simultaneously, and therefore many proteins of the same type can be produced from one mRNA molecule .
