Poncet Island is a roughly horseshoe-shaped island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is the easternmost of the Kuprijanow Islands and is located in front of the entrance to Diaz Cove . The island is a breeding ground for a variety of Antarctic sea birds .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2006. It is named after the couple Sally (* 1954) and Jérôme Poncet (* 1946), who had been researching the bird life of South Georgia for over 30 years.
