Ponte Giovanni da Verrazzano

The Ponte Giovanni da Verrazzano is a bridge in Florence over the Arno River . Among the Florentine bridges it is the second most upstream, after the Ponte di Varlungo. The bridge connects the districts of Campo di Marte (north) and Gavinana (south). On the north side it starts at Lungarno Cristoforo Colombo, on the south side it comes to Piazza Ravenna.

It is named after the Tuscan navigator and explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano .

Technical specifications

The bridge is 141 meters long, 26.80 meters wide and has a maximum height of 12 meters. It is of modern design and the span of its single- span girder system is 113 meters. The structure is made of steel and reinforced concrete.

construction of the bridge

The construction was finished in 1970. The project was the work of engineers Carlo Damerini and Vittorio Scalesse and the architect Leonardo Savioli. The bridge is visibly divided into three parts. The outer two parts, symmetrical and made of concrete, start at the opposite banks and are connected by a central part, which has a metal structure. There is seating for pedestrians in the side panels.
