Pontius Furius Pontianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pontius Furius (?) Pontianus was governor of Lower Moesia from June / August 217 to November / December of the same year and then presumably governor of the Roman province of Pannonia Inferior (Lower Pannonia).

In Moesia inferior (Lower Moesia ), Pontianus replaced Marcus Statius Longinus , who for the new emperor Macrinus apparently had too tight ties to the murdered Caracalla . Pontianus is there on coins with the name form P. Fu. Pontian testifies. He was victorious against the tribes across the Danube. The fruits of this victory fell to his successor Marcius Claudius Agrippa. In the meantime, Pontianus presumably replaced the Lower Pannonian governor Aelius Triccianus if he can be identified with Pontius Pontianus , who was attested there as governor . There, too, he was apparently militarily successful and thus survived the fall of Macrinus. He is still attested under Elagabal , but there is no information about his further life.

The second Gentiliz should possibly be added as Fuscus if the governor is identical to Pontius Fuscus Pontianus, who is attested as Curator rei publicae in Lavinium in 227 AD .
