Ponzichter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ponzichter (from Hungarian poncichter ) was initially the name for a small part of the German minority group , namely for the wine growers in the area around Ödenburg ( Hungary ). The name is a mocked form of bean growers , as the German origin or Franconian wine growers earlier between the vines beans have been planted.

The cultivation of beans and other vegetables such as tomatoes brought the winegrowers additional income and could reduce losses in the event of poor harvests. In addition, the cultivation of beans had a positive effect on the vines, since beans belong to the legumes .

The term appeared at the end of the 19th century and was later used to designate an influential social class in Ödenburg . They lived on the northern outskirts of Ödenburg and their vineyards stretched to Lake Neusiedl . A neighborhood in Ödenburg was also named after them.
