Pootatuck State Forest is a state forest in the area of the cities of New Fairfield and Sherman . Recreational opportunities include hiking, hunting, bird watching, skiing, snowmobiling. The forest is accessible by hiking trails from adjacent Squantz Pond State Park to the east . In the west, the park almost extends to the border of New York State . This is where the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area joins. The Short Woods Brook rises in the southern part of the forest and flows south, the Worden Brook rises in the western part of the forest and turns east to Squantz Pond .
Surname
The name goes back to the Indian tribe of the same name, the Algonquin group, who were originally native to the area.
