By voting by letter or postcard, Poporama listeners voted on their favorite songs, which would be played as “Heta högen” on the next program.

Initially, Heta Högen wasn't a hit list in the strict sense of the word, as the songs were played regardless of their rank. Between 1974 and 1984, the existence of Poporama, it comprised up to 12 songs of varying length, with a minimum of 4. The weekly award "Veckan's Smash Hit" was given to the song that received the most votes as a new performance.

From March 1st, the songs were played according to their ranking. The length of stay of the songs was rather short, six to seven weeks were an exception. The steadily increasing range of new songs finally prompted Kaj Kindvall to start the program Trackslistan.
