The party's chairman was Kwame Wiafe, and Kwesi Pratt was the general secretary. The PPDD was in the political tradition of the Nkrumarists. In May 1996, she joined the People's Convention Party .

On September 10, 1992, the PPDD formed a political alliance with the People's Heritage Party and the National Independence Party (Ghana) . The PPDD did not take part in the 1992 elections due to the general boycott of the opposition parties. In May 1995, Secretary General Pratt called on the former military dictator and then the first President of Ghana in the Fourth Republic to step down and pave the way for new elections. The PPDD accused the government of Rawlings of incompetence.

As an expression of the opposition to Rawlings, the PPDD tried to persuade an appointed human rights commission to investigate unexplained deaths during Rawlings' second takeover since December 31, 1981. The Commission denied the power of the PPDD to submit an application.
