Porcher Island is an island in the northern coastal area of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The island lies in front of the mouth of the Skeena River and, with an area of 521 km² and a circumference of 267 km, is one of the ten largest islands in the province. It is located at the transition from Hecate Strait to Dixon Entrance . There are no major settlements on the island. The nearest major city is Prince Rupert, north-northeast on the mainland. The island belongs to the North Coast Regional District and is named after the captain of the British Royal Navy Edwin A. Porcher.
The island is traditionally a settlement and hunting area mainly for the Gitxaała , a Tsimshian people , who also have a reserve on the southwestern Dophin Island .
To the west, the Hecate Strait separates the island from the mainland. The highest point on the island, at 892 m , is Egeria Mountain in the south . The island is surrounded by countless smaller islands. In the south, separated by the Ogden Channel , is Pitt Island, a larger island.
The ships that operate on the Inside Passage usually pass the island to the east.
