Port Alberni Mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Port Alberni Mill is a pulp and paper mill located in the Canadian city of Port Alberni , British Columbia on the edge of Alberni Inlet. As part of "Catalyst Paper", the factory operates two paper machines that produce 340,000 tons per year. One machine produces 116,000 tons of directory paper, the other 224,000 tons of coated paper . In 2014 the company employed 324 people.

The mill was founded in 1946 by Bloedel, Stewart and Welch, originally only to produce paper using the sulphate process . This was due to an order from Fisheries and Oceans Canada that banned the sulphite process (another process). In addition to the first major factory opened in British Columbia (BC) this decade, it was the first BC to process sawmill residues. In 1951, as part of a company merger, ownership of the company was transferred to MacMillan Bloedel. The two paper machines were installed in 1957 to initially produce newsprint. The mill was first owned by Pacifica Papers in 1998, then by Norske Skog , Canada in 2000 , and then by Catalyst Paper in 2005.
