Port Antonio is the capital of the Parish Portland on the northeast coast of Jamaica and is located about 100 km northeast of Kingston .
In 1982 Port Antonio had 12,285 inhabitants and in 1991 the population had grown to 13,246. At the last census in 2001, around 15,000 people lived here.
Port Antonio is the third largest port in Jamaica, mostly as a shipping port for bananas and coconuts . The port is a tourist attraction and tourism is an important source of income for the local economy. In Port Antonio, the first tourists came to the island in the middle of the 19th century. They brought banana trucks from the United States, especially from Boston. At that time, the city was also called World's Banana Capital .
There are various attractions in the area around Port Antonio, including the Blue Lagoon, around 7 kilometers east of Port Antonio, which is 54 meters deep in some places. Boat tours are available on the Rio Grande River .
