The Port Ellen Lighthouse , English Port Ellen Lighthouse , Gaelic Carraig Fhada Lighthouse , is a lighthouse on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located on a rocky headland called Carraig Fhada in the north of the Oa peninsula about two kilometers from the opposite ferry port, Port Ellen . The lighthouse marks the western limit of the entrance to the port of Port Ellen. It is listed in the British monument lists in category B. The lighthouse was built in 1832 by Walter Frederick Campbell , the island's laird , in memory of his wife, Lady Eleanor Charteris , who died at the age of 36.

Port Ellen Lighthouse has an unusual architecture for a lighthouse. It consists of a 17 m high tower with a square base of 5.5 m side length. There are rooms on three floors, which are accessible via the slightly lower stair tower, which is built in a north-easterly direction and has a square base area of 3.4 m side length. The tower closes flat at the top. The beacon is located at the end of a short, blunt mast that is attached in the middle of the area. This part of the tower is only accessible via a ladder. The 80 cm thick masonry consists of limed quarry stone. The main entrance is on the west side and thus on the landward side. A memorial plaque is attached above. A second entrance can be found on the north side. The building was last restored in 2003 and 2004. The associated buildings for the accommodation of the lighthouse keeper are now used as private apartments.
