Portaferry Castle ( Irish Caisleán Phort an Pheire ) is a ruined castle on the harbor of Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland . The small residential tower was William de Savage built in the 16th century. Today he is a State Care Historic Monument in Town Country of Bally Philip in District Ards and North Down .

history

It is believed that a member of the Savage family had the castle built in the 16th century. In 1635, Patrick Savage's brother-in-law, Sir James Montgomery of Rosemount ( Gray Abbey ) had the castle repaired. He made new roofs and floors so that his sister could live there more comfortably.

construction

It is a square-plan building with a small protruding turret on the south corner. The residential tower has three floors and an attic, all without vaults. Much of the eastern corner has collapsed. The entrance in the basement is protected by small machinists and the entrance to the room on the ground floor by a meurtrière . A curved staircase in the tower leads to the upper floor and a spiral staircase in the west corner leads to the top floor.
