Portal Tomb from Middletown
The portal Tomb of Middletown in County Cavan ( there are five more townland names in Ireland ) is located at Loughduff, southwest of Bellananagh in Ireland . On the western border of the townland lies the White Lough and about 350 m east of it, in undulating terrain, is the Portal Tomb, also known as "Druid's Altar" . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.
The small chamber has a 1.9 meter long capstone (rest) and portal stones one meter apart, which are over 1.8 meters high. The capstone is broken and the part that extended forward beyond the portal stones is missing, as is the end stone. The side wall stones of the chamber are about 1.5 meters long and 1.0 meters high. They support the capstone at a strong angle. The chamber is partially covered by bushes and contaminated with household waste.
