Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation
Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation is a memorial and burial place to fifteen aviation pioneers located in North Hollywood , Los Angeles , California .
The folded wing portal was built in 1924 as the main entrance to the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery . The portal with a structure made of marble, mosaic and sculptures and a height of around 23 meters became the final resting place for pilots and flight pioneers in 1953. The monument, designed in the style of the Spanish Colonial Revival , was entered on March 18, 1998 in the National Register of Historic Places .
Burials
- Bertrand Blanchard Acosta (1895–1954) co-pilot of Admiral Richard Byrd In 1927 they crossed the Atlantic from Europe to America in 48 hours on a non-stop flight
- Jimmie Angel (1899–1956), bush pilot and discoverer of the Salto Ángel - his ashes were later removed and scattered over the falls
- Walter Richard Brookins (1889–1953), flew for the Wright brothers
- Mark Mitchell Campbell (1897–1963), stunt pilot and aircraft designer
- Richard Peter Della-Vedowa (1917–1994), pilot and developer of jet-powered combat aircraft at Lockheed
- Samuel Warren Eaton (1891–1966), colonel and pilot who also built aircraft for Lincoln Beachy
- Winfield Bertrum Kinner (1882–1957), also known as Bert Kinner, an aircraft designer. Amelia Earhart flew a kinner.
- Roy Augustus Knabenshue (1876–1960), balloon and airship pilot
- John Bevins Moisant (1868–1910), won the Statue of Liberty race in 1910 and the first pilot to fly a passenger across the English Channel.
- Matilde Moisant (1878–1964), the second licensed female pilot in the United States in 1911
- Elizabeth Lippincott McQueen (1878–1958), the first female pilot in Los Angeles
- James Floyd Smith (1884–1956), test pilot, instructor, parachute maker. He built and flew his own airplane in 1912 and invented the parachute for the army in 1918.
- Hilder Florentina Smith (1890–1977), aerial acrobat and parachutist.
- Carl Browne Squier (1893–1967), World War I aviator, Barnstorm, test pilot and aircraft dealer. As Vice President of Lockheed Aircraft, he sold their Sirius aircraft to Charles and Anne Lindbergh in 1931.
- Charles Edward Taylor (1868–1956), machinist for the Wright brothers, designed the engine for the maiden flight.
