Portas GR
GR is the abbreviation for the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland and is used to avoid confusion with other entries of the name Portas . |
Portas is a hamlet in the municipality of Sumvitg ( Graubünden , Switzerland ).
location
The hamlet is the first farm when entering the Val Sumvitg, which is a south-facing side valley of the Surselva and one of the accesses to the Greina .
Background to the label
The name "Portas" - in the singular "Porta" - comes from the Rhaeto-Romanic language and means "gate". The only year-round access to Val Sumvitg led and still leads through Portas. It is therefore likely that the name is derived from the geographical location: the gate to Val Sumvitg (Rom. "Las Portas dalla Val Sumvitg", abbreviated to "Portas").
history
The Portas farm used to be a classic business with large and small cattle that fed for many generations. When a landslide in 1983 buried the access road to the Val Sumvitg, they were forced to find an alternative to traditional farming. In a free-range goose farm, it was believed that an option had been found. However, this attempt was discontinued after a year. From 1984 the meadows are cultivated in the traditional way and the harvest is brought from the valley. The farmhouse is now used as a holiday home.
