The fort, which was expanded into a Norman castle in the 11th century, is considered the best preserved Roman fort north of the Alps. The parish church of St. Mary's was built around 1120 by the Normans from sandstone from the Isle of Wight , renovated and supplemented in the Elizabethan era after a partial collapse and is particularly worth seeing because of its simple beauty.
