Porte de la Craffe

The Porte de la Craffe is an imposing city gate in Nancy in France .

history

It was built in the 14th century at the northern entrance to the old town in Gothic style. A striking architectural element are the elaborately crafted machicolations , the large pointed arch panel is decorated with a Lorraine cross . Two mighty round towers were added to the gate tower in the 15th century , which served as dungeons . As part of the construction of bastions in the 16th century, a second gate (Porte Notre-Dame) was built in advance and connected to the Porte de la Craffe by a covered corridor .

When the medieval city fortifications were rebuilt by the royal French fortress builder Vauban (around 1680), it was the only one to be included unchanged in the new defense concept - similar to the German Gate in neighboring Metz . The gate received a roof with a lantern and a baroque vestibule, which was restored in a neo-Gothic style in the 19th century .
