The port of Ripetta or Porto Clementino was a river port in Rome on the Tiber, in the area in front of the Church of San Girolamo dei Croati

History and description

In the 14th century, in the area in front of the church of San Rocco all'Augusteo, there was a small rudimentary port where wood, coal and wine were unloaded. Only at the beginning of the 18th century did Pope Clement XI approve . the project for the construction of a new imposing harbor with quays, stairs and squares. The design was entrusted to the architect Alessandro Specchi , who used the collaboration of Carlo Fontana . The work, which was built using stones from the Colosseum , was inaugurated on August 16, 1704.

The construction, an important example of late Baroque architecture, was characterized by two large, curved stairs that connected the docks with the street. In the middle was a semicircle with a fountain to water the pack animals with which the goods were transported. On the sides of the semicircle stood two pillars that indicate the state of the Tiber floods

In the second half of the 19th century, the river banks and roads along the Tiber were radically redesigned to improve flood protection measures and the city's transport links. The new street on the left bank is called Lungotevere.

In the area of Porto di Ripetta, an iron bridge was built between 1877 and 1879 over the Tiber and adjacent to the port. This in turn led to the construction of another larger bridge, the Ponte Cavour, which opened in 1901 and the Porto di Ripetta was demolished. Photographs from the late 19th century document the port, the iron bridge and the new Ponte Cavour.
