Possession Island (from English possession , property ' ) is an island in the Ross Sea off the Borchgrevink coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is the northernmost and largest island in the group of the Possession Islands, southeast of the Adare Peninsula .
It was discovered during the Antarctic expedition (1839-1843) of the British polar explorer James Clark Ross . With the name, this commemorated the occupation of the island for the British Empire by the hoisting of the Union Jack on January 12, 1841.
