history

Postbank's beginnings go back to the 1860s. It was founded as part of the New Zealand Post Office under the name New Zealand Post Office Savings Bank . When banking services were spun off from the New Zealand Post Office as part of the privatization of public companies under the Postal Services Act 1987 , the government founded Post Office Bank Limited on February 24, 1987 and continued to operate it publicly under the name Postbank .

In 1989 the government sold Postbank to the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), which gradually integrated its banking operations into its business model. On December 1, 1994, the Post Office Bank was finally dissolved. The Postbank brand name disappeared from the New Zealand market forever.

In 2001, the then Labor government under Helen Clark decided to re-establish a state-owned bank on the market. It was called Kiwibank and still operates in the market today as a state-owned enterprise and subsidiary of the New Zealand Post .
