The post office building in the Spanish city of Castellón de la Plana was completed in 1932 and is one of the most representative buildings in the city. It was designed in Neomudejar and Valencian Art Nouveau styles by architects Demetrio Ribes y Marco and Joaquín Dicenta Vilaplana .

location

The free-standing post office is located in the center of the city. To the west, the building borders directly on the small Tetouan Square, to the east is König-Jakob-I.-Straße.

history

The construction of the building was based on a Spain-wide program from 1909, which provided that every provincial capital should be equipped with a post office. The construction of a post office in Castellón was put out to tender in 1916 and initially awarded to the Valencian architect Demetrio Ribes. After his death in 1921, the architect Joaquín Dicenta Vilaplana continued his project. The post office building was finally completed in 1932.

The building hit the headlines locally after a young man threatened to kill himself with a saw on January 15, 2007. The police were able to evacuate the building after 45 minutes and everyone present remained unharmed.

In 2010 the building was restored. Today it is the administrative building of the local post office Correos y Telégrafos de Castellón .

architecture

Detail of the facade

The free-standing building with a rectangular floor plan has three floors with rounded corners. The building is reminiscent of a medieval castle and is equipped with six small turrets. The turrets protrude a little over the top floor of the building and have a roof covered with red roof tiles.

The facade of the building is designed symmetrically and is loosened up by many small and narrow openings. Various earth-colored types of stone were used in the construction of the facade. However, bricks dominate, which were mainly used in the upper area. A large number of ceramic surfaces by the artist JB Segarra Bernat in the colors blue, white and yellow are incorporated into the facade. Some of the ceramic surfaces depict animals or plants.

The building has an inner courtyard crowned with a glass dome in which the post office is located. The dome is supported by an iron structure and consists largely of non-transparent white glass. In the center is a star made of yellow glass surfaces.
