The building stone for those who fell in the sea battle off Alvøen is a war memorial in the Norwegian city of Bergen .

location

It is located in downtown Bergen on the back of the Kreuzkirche on the north side of the Nedre Korskirkeallmenningen street near the eastern intersection with Kong Oscars gate .

Design and history

The memorial commemorates those who died in the sea battle off Alvøen in the gunboat warfare of the coalition wars . The battle took place on May 16, 1808 off Alvøen near Bergen between the British frigate Tartar and the armed forces of Bergen. The frigate itself had to withdraw as a result of the fighting, five people died on the side of Bergen's defenders who were buried in the cemetery of the Kreuzkirche.

Today's memorial stone was not unveiled until much later, on May 16, 1893, the 85th anniversary of the battle, and gives the names and origins of the fallen.

The monument consists of a tall, slender stone reminiscent of a building block. It stands on a small base made of natural stone and is surrounded by five metal posts that are connected with chains.

The stone bears an inscription in Norwegian on the front . The inscription reads:

STENEN

In German the inscription reads roughly: The stone reminds of the brothers in arms Jens Hansen, Kjøbenhavn ; Torbjørn Knudsen, Sogn ; Guttorm Haugland, Vaag; Johan Beum, Leirdal; Lars Andersen, Drotningevik. Fallen in battle near Alvøen May 16, 1808.

Below the text is the depiction of two crossed weapons.

After the unveiling of the monument, two typographical errors were found. For example, Guttorm Haugland incorrectly stated Vang instead of Vaag. While this bug was being corrected, another bug remained uncorrected. Johan Beum (1781–1808) did not come from Lærdal , but from Hafslo .
