Alvøen is a formerly important industrial location in the Norwegian city of Bergen . With its manor house , around 40 workers' houses and factories, it is considered the oldest and best-preserved industrial district in the country. Alvøen is located in the far west of the city in the Laksevåg district by Alvepollen Bay. The area covers 2.78 square kilometers and had 683 inhabitants on January 1, 2012.

history

From 1626 Hans Sørensøn, Jacum Bunde and Claus von Rechen operated the grain and powder mill on site. When the powder mill exploded in 1631, the grain mill burned down too. Both were rebuilt, but the powder mill exploded several times. From the 19th century, production in Alvøen expanded and an oil mill , wire mill as well as a paint mill , paper mill and shipyard were added. After dynamite was invented in the 1880s, the powder mill was closed in 1886. Many of the other productions were also discontinued in favor of the paper mill.

Several factories were built during 350 years of industrial history. One of the oldest buildings is the forge , with thickly bricked and whitewashed walls, and an office building from around 1730. The workers' houses date from the 19th century. They belonged to the local paper mill until 1981 and were placed under ensemble protection in 1983 . Today they mainly belong to the former workers of the settlement and their descendants. Many of the houses have been restored.

On May 16, 1808, during the gunboat war of the coalition wars, the sea battle of Alvøen occurred near the town . The building stone for those who died in the sea battle off Alvøen in the inner city of Bergen is a reminder of this.

Didrich Jansen Fasmer bought more land in Alvøen between 1744 and 1754. There the paper mill Alvøen Papirfabrikk A / S was founded . It produced in Alvøen from 1797 to 1981 and was the oldest paper mill in the country. She made rag paper , a wood-free paper made from cellulose fiber . Initially, the range included document paper, writing paper and coarser paper. The company later specialized in finer quality paper. In 1864 the first of two paper machines that produced paper from wood pulp was installed. One of the paper machines is now in the Norsk Teknisk Museum . From 1888, checks and banknotes were made for the Norges Bank on a regular basis from 1908 to 1987, initially sporadically .

The company Alvøen Gamle Mølle A / S is the direct successor of the Papirfabrikk A / S . The name change took place in 1998 when Hendrik Jan Fasmer and his children took over the shares from the other family members. Since 1987 there has been a collaboration with the Dutch company Van Gelder based in Apeldoorn . This group produces, among other things, Alvøens Bøttepost 1797 stationery from very fine rag paper.

The manor house, built in the 1790s, is located outside the settlement on the other side of the ferry dock. The single-storey house was designed in the Rococo style, with two wing extensions and a central gable. It was originally intended to be used as a summer house, but was the family's permanent residence until 1808. It was given its present form in the Empire style after a renovation in 1830 by Hendrik J. Fasmer. Between 1931 and 1932 it was enlarged and modernized again.

The house has been a listed building since 1923 . In 1953 a foundation was set up for the house, which was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the building. In 1982 it was taken over by the Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum , which opened an in-house museum in 1983. It has been managed by the Bymuseet i Bergen since 2005 .

Many objects belonging to the Fasmer family are on display in the house. The furniture dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. The walls are decorated with French landscape wallpapers with hunting scenes. The Chinese porcelain is in the porcelain room .
