Postal code (Lithuania)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Five-digit postcodes are used in Lithuania . As in Germany , a distinction is made between delivery, post office box and major customer postcodes; there are also postcodes for post offices.

However, the delivery postcodes cover much smaller spatial units than in Germany: In rural areas there is a postcode for one or a few villages or settlements, also subdivided within a political municipality. In cities and large villages, a postcode covers one or a few streets. Typically the first 2 digits denote a district ( rajonas ), e.g. B. 83 for Pakruojis . The lowest numbers are for the post office branches, the delivery postcodes start at 101. Large districts have several starting digits (e.g. 21 and 25 for Trakai ).

Previous system

Before independence, the six-digit Soviet postcodes were used. After that, the structure initially remained unchanged, only the first two digits, which were uniform throughout Lithuania, were left out. The postcodes were thus four digits.
