PostNuke is a freely available web content management system (WCMS), written in PHP and licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The project has now been discontinued. The Postnuke developer team has started a new project with Zikula on a completely new code basis . But it is possible to import content from Postnuke sites. Support for the update ended in June 2009.

PostNuke has a modular structure. Additional features can be used by installing additional modules, for example with articles, web links, downloads, FAQ, picture galleries, forums, etc. PostNuke has a core that, in addition to the programming interface ( API ), the ADOdb database abstraction (which will in future be MySQL should also support other database systems) and the Smarty -based templating also contains extensive security, user and group management.

In addition to its classic area of the private homepage or small community, the project aims at professional use. The introduction of the Xanthia templating system was of great importance for the project. This allows content to be largely separated from layout.

Due to the origins of PHP-Nuke , PostNuke initially adopted its reputation for instability and security deficiencies. In order to counteract this, the programmers say they are very concerned about security and stability. Documentation and support are available in the German-speaking community as well as in the international support area. The new version 0.8 has been completely revised so that the concept and the entire source code of PHP-Nuke are different. Therefore it will be published under the name Zikula in the future.

organization

Behind PostNuke is a large international and a strong German community. In June 2004, the PostNuke Software Foundation was founded as a non-profit organization in the USA based on the model of the Apache Foundation . With the founding members Harry Zink, Vanessa Haakansson, Mark West, Karma Dordrak and the German PostNuke e. V. , the Foundation not only stands for stability, but also serves as a contact for legal questions or donations.

Some of the main German developers are also known as PostNuke e. V. organized. The association not only takes care of the development, but also of the German-language documentation and support in the forum. Membership is of course not required to participate in the German-speaking community - membership fees and donations are, however, invested in promoting the project and can thus also be viewed as a contribution to development.

In August 2004 the association organized the first European PostNuke meeting in Stuttgart, where developers and users from Germany, England, Belgium, Denmark and Bavaria met and worked on the future of their system for two days. The new edition of the pnMeeting for developers and users in August 2005 showed above all the growing interest of commercial users in PostNuke. This success was built on and the pnMeeting has become an integral part of the PostNuke community every year. In 2007 it took place at the University of Osnabrück and focused on the new generation of the upcoming version .8.

Name change

In June 2008 PostNuke became Zikula . The name Zikula [sikula:] comes from the Zulu language and means something like "quick" and "easy". With the name, the previous CMS has also changed into a complete web application framework.
