Potamia from Ypsarion

The place Potamia is located on the island of Thasos above the bay of the same name at the foot of the Ipsarion massif at about 130 m above sea level in the midst of lush vegetation. With the small port of Skala Potamias on the southern foothills of the Bay of Potamia and the settlement of Levki, the number of inhabitants reaches 1472. In the village there is a museum with the works of the sculptor Polygnotos Vagis (Πολύγνωτος Βαγής). Vagis was born in Potamia in 1894. Another famous citizen of the place is the painter Umbertos Argyros (Ουμβέρτος Αργυρός), professor at the Athens School of Art from 1929 and member of the Athens Academy.

The island round road leads through the eastern area of Potamia, starting from this some routes branch off to the west into the slope of the Ipsarion massif and to the south over the pass between Kamenos Vrachos (1,075 m NN) and Fanos (744 m NN) towards Theologos. On the ascent to Kamenos Vrachos on the right one of the most remarkable churches on the island, Agios Demetrios, with the nearby monastery and the remains of the dilapidated village of Adina. In addition, the foundations of a marble square tower from the 4th century BC were laid there in 1926. BC, called "to Elleniko" (το Ελλενικό), discovered.

Chrysi Akti beach (golden coast) extends in the area of Skala Potamia, at the southern end of which there is a stone Kaïki shed from the 19th century, which is ascribed to an Athos monastery.

It is not certain when the settlement of Potamia arose, probably after Thasos ceded to Muhammad Ali Pasha . Until the 20th century, Potamia was a poor settlement next to the rich places Theologos and Panagia , which developed into a large, independent place only very late.
