The Potamon Lake ( Greek Λίμνη Ποταμών , Limni Potamon ) is a reservoir near the Greek city ​​of Rethymno on Crete . He ensures the water supply for the city of Rethymno and its surroundings.

Lake Potamon is the largest freshwater lake in Crete.

The lake is located about 14 km as the crow flies south-east of Rethymno near the villages of Prasses and Voleones at the exit of the fertile Amari Valley.

The water in the lake

The lake has an area of ​​16 square kilometers, its maximum depth is 54 meters. The storage volume is 22.5 million cubic meters. The reservoir has a bank length of twelve kilometers.

The dam

The dam of the Potamon Lake, also called Amari Dam ( Greek ischράγμα του Αμαρίου ), consists of an embankment . Its height is 55 meters from the base to the crown. The dam is 310 meters wide at the foot and 10 meters at the top.

Building history

After preliminary considerations and planning that went back to the 1960s, construction work began in 1996. The lake was completed in 2008. The project was financed to 75% by the European Union . The construction costs amounted to 50 million euros.

Flora and fauna

The Potamon Reservoir is one of the most important wetland biotopes in the eastern Mediterranean. Numerous birds and other animal species have already settled.

In July 2014, a two meter long crocodile was spotted in the lake . The reptile, which appears to be a released pet, has been photographed and filmed several times since, but has not been captured. In the media it is called "Sifis" (diminutive of Joseph in Greek Ἰωσήφ ). In early 2015 the crocodile was found dead floating in the reservoir.
