The Potaro is a river in the Republic of Guyana in South America .

It rises on Mount Ayanganna in the Pakaraima Mountains ( mountainous country of Guyana ) on the border with Brazil . South of Omai , the Potaro flows into the Essequibo after 225 km and a gradient of 1800 meters . The Kaieteur and Amatuk waterfalls are located in the course of the Potaro . In recent years, the Potaro has been exposed to considerable environmental pollution from gold mining along its course.

In 1908 the German-American biologist Carl Eigenmann undertook an expedition along the Potaro and Essequibo and documented 336 species of fish occurring here.
