Potato patch plan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Potato Patch Plan was a community farming project in the US city of Detroit .

In 1895, the Mayor of Detroit, Hazen S. Pingree , had an innovative idea of how to get a grip on the consequences of the economic depression . That was the so-called "Mayor Pingree's Potato Patch Plan". He asked the owners of vacant land to provide those for the poor to grow potatoes and vegetables. The plants and seeds were distributed free of charge so that the needy and unemployed people could plant their own food.

In 1894, 3,000 families applied to the city's agricultural committee for the opportunity to farm a piece of land, but due to budget constraints, land could only be allocated to 945 families. The mayor reported that people in need were almost beginning to struggle for the possibility of getting a piece of land.

In the span of a few years, 6000 potato fields were cultivated. The principle spread and some other cities applied it after the Detroit model. The mayor became known throughout America under the nickname "Potato Patch Pingree".
