Potrace is an open-source - vectorizer ( Engl. Tracer ), which grid - in Illustrations converted. Potrace is developed by Peter Selinger and is dual-licensed: under the GPL and as Potrace Professional under a proprietary license from Selinger's company Icosasoft Software.

Front ends

There are various graphical front ends for the command line program Potrace, for example it is integrated in the free vector graphics editor Inkscape under the menu item Path - Vectorize Bitmap . Even the free font editor FontForge can to Potrace importing of bitmap graphics use.

Output of images

Potrace can handle many output formats, including PostScript , PDF and SVG .

The output of Potrace is black and white , color images are converted to black and white images as they are read in before they are vectorized. Nevertheless, Inkscape enables color or grayscale images to be vectorized by vectorizing each color channel as a single black and white image separately from Potrace.
