Encounters in Potsdam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Potsdam Encounters are a forum for discussion that aims to promote cultural understanding between Germany and Russia . Like the Petersburg Dialogue, they are an event of the German-Russian Forum , a non-profit association based in Berlin that promotes social exchange between the two countries.

The Potsdam Encounters were initiated in 1999 by the then German President Roman Herzog . They got their name from the most frequent event location in the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam . However, some meetings took place in Moscow in 2002, 2015, 2016 and 2018 and in Berlin in 2017 and 2019 . In 2020, the 23rd discussion forum on the COVID-19 pandemic took place in digital format.

The Potsdam encounters are funded by the Federal Foreign Office and the State of Brandenburg as well as by companies.

Content

While the Petersburg Dialogue primarily offers German and Russian representatives from politics and business a forum for discussion, the Potsdam encounters are intended to promote exchange between the two countries in the fields of culture and science . Current social issues such as demographic change or globalization are discussed . The discussion rounds are combined with art exhibitions, readings and film screenings in order to broaden the discussion horizon beyond the usual framework of expert rounds.
