The Hiratsuka Station ( Jap. 平塚駅 , Hiratsuka-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated by the railway company JR East . It is located in Kanagawa Prefecture in the Hiratsuka City area .

Hiratsuka is a through station on the JR East operated Tōkaidō Main Line , one of the most important railway lines in Japan. There is a lot of traffic with a large number of regional and express trains ; During rush hour, up to 13 trains stop here every hour in each direction. Particularly noteworthy are the Commuter Rapid ( 通勤 快速 , Tsūkin Kaisoku ) from Tokyo to Odawara and the Shōnan Liner ( 湘南 ラ イ ナ ー , Shōnan Rainā ). In addition, individual trains on the Shōnan-Shinjuku line operate via the nominal terminus Ōfuna to Odawara. The bus station on the northern forecourt is served by over 60 lines of the Kanagawa Chūō Kōtsū company, plus eight other lines on the southern forecourt.
The facility is located in the Takarachō district and faces east to west. It has ten tracks, four of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on two completely covered central platforms . They can be reached at their western end via a covered pedestrian overpass. At the eastern end, a riding station spans the entire complex. The Lusca Chigasaki shopping center with 160 shops is integrated into the reception building on the northeast side . It is managed by Shonan Station Building , a subsidiary of JR East.
In the 2017 fiscal year, an average of 61,846 passengers used the station every day.

history
On July 11, 1887, the state railway administration opened the station, along with the section of the Tōkaidō main line from Yokohama to Kōzu . From July 1, 1906 to April 1, 1924 there was a branch line for freight traffic between the station and the port of Hiratsuka. The Great Kanto earthquake on September 1, 1923 destroyed the bridge over the Sagami , about one kilometer east of the station ; during the reconstruction the trains turned in Hiratsuka. The Japanese National Railways shifted on 25 September 1971, the total cargo handling to two kilometers the western Sagami freight station. In 1973 the original station building was replaced by a new building. For cost reasons, the state railway stopped checking in luggage on November 1, 1986. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR East on April 1, 1987 .
There are plans to extend the Izumino line of the Sagami Tetsudō railway company from today's terminus Shōnandai to Hiratsuka. The project is to be implemented by 2030.
