The Chigasaki Station ( Jap. 茅ケ崎駅 , Chigasaki-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated by the railway company JR East . It is located in Kanagawa Prefecture in the Chigasaki City area .

description

Chigasaki is a separation station on the Tōkaidō main line from Tokyo via Nagoya to Osaka , one of the most important railway lines in Japan. From this the Sagami line branches off to Hashimoto . The JR East railway company is responsible for passenger transport on both routes .

On the Tōkaidō main line there is brisk traffic with a large number of local and express trains ; During rush hour, up to 13 trains stop here every hour in each direction. Particularly noteworthy are the Commuter Rapid ( 通勤 快速 , Tsūkin Kaisoku ) from Tokyo to Odawara and the Shōnan Liner ( 湘南 ラ イ ナ ー , Shōnan Rainā ). In addition, individual trains on the Shōnan-Shinjuku line operate via the nominal terminus Ōfuna to Odawara. Local trains on the Sagami line run every 15 minutes during the morning and evening rush hour, every 20 minutes during the day and every half hour late in the evening. During rush hour, individual trains run via Hashimoto to Hachiōji and back. The bus station on the northern forecourt is served by over two dozen lines from the Kanagawa Chūō Kōtsū company, plus a shuttle bus to Tokyo Narita Airport . Another nine lines from Kanagawa Chūō Kōtsū run from the southern forecourt.

The plant is located in the central Motowachi district and faces east to west. It has seven tracks, six of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on two central platforms , both of which are covered. The station building has the shape of a riding station , which spans the entire facility in its western part. Integrated into this is the Lusca Chigasaki shopping center with 120 shops. It is managed by Shonan Station Building , a subsidiary of JR East. A wide pedestrian bridge leads from the reception building over the station square and provides connections to neighboring commercial buildings.

In the 2017 fiscal year, an average of 56,149 passengers used the station every day.

history

The train station in 1898
Platform locks

The state railway administration had opened the section of the Tōkaidō main line leading through Chigasaki in 1887, but the trains ran here without stopping for over a decade. The station was finally put into operation on June 15, 1898. The private railway company Sagami Tetsudō opened the first section of the Sagami line from Chigasaki to Samukawa on September 28, 1921 . Ten years later the route led to Hashimoto and in 1944 it was nationalized. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on February 1, 1984, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. Five weeks later, on April 19, 1985, the construction of the new reception building was completed.

As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR East on April 1, 1987 . In 1994, the new owner built an additional platform in place of the freight tracks that were no longer in use. The northern bus station was modernized from 1996 to 1998, and the Chigasaki Lusca shopping center in the reception building was significantly expanded from 2013 to 2015 .
