The Shōnandai train station ( Japanese 湘南 台 駅 , Shōnandai-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshū . It is located in Kanagawa Prefecture in the Fujisawa City area and is a major transportation hub. This is where two railway lines and a line from the Yokohama Subway meet.

Shōnandai is a crossing station where three lines cross on different levels. On the one hand, it is on the Odakyū Enoshima line of the Odakyū Dentetsu railway company , on the other hand, the Sōtetsu Izumino line of the Sagami Tetsudō and the blue line of the Yokohama subway end here . In terms of traffic, the Enoshima Line is the most important; it counts more passengers than the other two lines combined.

All express trains of the Express and Rapid Express types stop here on the Enoshima line , which run from Shinjuku in central Tokyo and together form an approximate 20-minute cycle. On weekdays is Fujisawa the terminus, weekends and holidays go almost all express trains further to Katase-Enoshima . Local trains run every ten minutes and are mostly limited to the connection between Sagami-Ōno and Katase-Enoshima (the northern terminus of individual trains is Machida ). On the Izumino line, in addition to local trains, there are express trains Rapid and Limited Express . With the exception of a few trains in the marginal hours, all of them go to Yokohama via the nominal terminus of Futamatagawa . A total of six trains per hour run during the day, and up to twelve trains per hour during rush hour.

Shōnandai is the only station outside of Yokohama on the Yokohama subway operated by the Yokohama City Transportation Department and the southern terminus of the Blue Line. Trains run from 5:30 a.m. to 0:30 a.m., eight times an hour during the day and up to 13 times an hour during rush hour. There is a bus station on both the western and eastern forecourt of the station . Two dozen lines of the Kanagawa Chūō Kōtsū company operate here .

The tower station stands in the middle of the district of the same name, surrounded by a business district with supermarkets, cultural centers and the museum of the vehicle manufacturer Isuzu . About two and a half kilometers to the west is the Shōnan Fujisawa campus of Keiō University . The above-ground through station of the Odakyū Enoshima Line is oriented from north to south . It has two tracks on two fully covered side platforms . From these you can get to the station forecourts on both sides at ground level and down to the distribution level in the first basement. It is 25 meters wide and contains several shops (there is no reception building as such). Since it also serves as a pedestrian underpass , it is accessible around the clock. The subway terminus is located in the second basement below the eastern end of the distribution level. It comprises two tracks on a central platform with platform screen doors . The tunnel station of the Sōtetsu Izumino line is located under the western end of the distribution level in the third basement. This also has two tracks on a central platform, but no platform screen doors.

In the 2018 fiscal year, an average of 170,945 passengers used the station every day. Of these, 92,776 were on the Odakyū Dentetsu, 28,780 on the Sagami Tetsudō and 49,389 on the subway.

history

From 1957, the Fujisawa authorities pushed ahead with an ambitious urban development project that envisaged the use of large areas on the Sagamino plateau in the north of the urban area. Extensive residential areas with views of Sagami Bay and industrial areas, including an Isuzu plant, were planned . The center of the district to be built was to be a new station on the Odakyū Enoshima line, which had existed since 1929 . The implementation of the plans began in 1964 and lasted twenty years. On November 7, 1966, the Odakyū Dentetsu railway company opened the Shōnandai station, the area around which is characterized by a dense construction. The district was initially called Engyō for two decades, but was renamed Shōnandai in 1984 because the name of the station was now much better known.

After Keiō University opened the new campus on the western edge of the district in 1990, passenger frequencies began to rise sharply. In August 1991, the city of Fujisawa, the Odakyū Dentetsu, the Sagami Tetsudō and the Yokohama City Transport Office signed an agreement to expand the station into a transport hub with three railway lines. On March 10, 1999, the Sagami Tetsudō extended the Sōtetsu Izumino line from Izumi-chūō to Shōnandai, with the first part of the underground distribution level going into operation on the same day. On August 29 of the same year, the Blue Line was extended from Totsuka , giving the station a subway connection. The converted Odakyū station part could be used from October 10, 1999, after which the old riding station was demolished. The project was completed on April 25, 2000 with the commissioning of the underground car park. There are plans to extend the Izumino line from Shōnandai to Hiratsuka ; the project is to be implemented by 2030.
