The Ito Station ( Jap. 伊東駅 , Ito-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated jointly by the railway companies , JR East and Izu Kyuko . It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture on the territory of Ito City .

description

The through station is located northwest of the center of Ito in the Yukawa district, just over a hundred meters from the coast of Sagami Bay . On the one hand, it is the end point of the Itō line of the JR East railway company coming from Atami . On the other hand, it is the starting point of their continuation, the Izu-Kyūkō line after Shimoda , which is owned by Izu Kyūkō . The facility, which is oriented from north to south, has three tracks for passenger traffic. These are located on a central platform and on the house platform (both covered), access is through an underpass . Three more tracks are used for the parking of trains and for occasional wagonload traffic from JR Freight . The reception building on the east side includes several shops and restaurants.

Both lines form an operational unit, the separation is only due to property law. Izu Kyūkō operates regional trains from Atami via Itō to Shimoda. These run every half hour during the day and are usually tied through in Itō , so that there is no need to change trains. JR East offers free Odoriko express trains from Tokyo to Shimoda every 30 to 60 minutes , all of which stop in Itō. Three pairs of trains are run as Super View Odoriko with panorama cars . There is a bus terminal on the station forecourt , which is the starting point for over a dozen bus routes operated by the Izu Tokai Bus company .

In 2016, an average of 12,872 passengers used the station every day, 7576 of them on JR East and 5,296 on Izu Kyūkō.

history

The station opened on December 15, 1938, when the Ministry of Railways put the second stage of the Itō line from Ajiro into operation. The planned extension towards Shimoda had to be abandoned for the time being after the outbreak of World War II . For this reason, Itō remained the terminus for over two decades. After the private railway company Tōkyō Kyūkō Dentetsu had received approval from the Ministry of Transport in 1959 to continue the line construction, they founded the subsidiary Itō Shimoda Denki Tetsudō (today's Izu Kyūkō ). Construction work began under her leadership in February 1960. This progressed rapidly so that the Izu-Kyūkō line could be opened on December 10, 1961. Freight traffic was stopped on October 1, 1980 by the Japanese State Railways , but resumed to a limited extent on March 31, 1987 on the Ito line. The following day, the state part of the station became the property of the newly founded company JR East .
