The Izukyū-Shimoda station ( Japanese 伊豆 急 下田 駅 , Izukyū-Shimoda-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshū , operated by the Izu Kyūkō railway company . It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Shimoda City area .
description
Izukyu-Shimoda is a terminal station at the southern end of the 45.7 km long, from the railway company Izu Kyuko operated Izu Kyuko line to Ito . It is located just north of the center of Shimoda in the Higashihongo district. The facility, which is oriented from north to south, has three tracks for passenger traffic, which are located on a central platform and a side platform . There are three sidings next to it. Both platforms are covered and lead into the reception building , which includes several shops and a restaurant. The eastern station forecourt is designed in the form of a roundabout. Immediately next to it is a bus terminal , which is the starting point for twenty bus routes operated by Nishi Izu Tokai Bus and Minami Izu Tokai Bus .
Izu Kyūkō operates regional trains from Shimoda via Itō to Atami . These run every half hour during the day and are usually tied through to the Itō line in Itō , so there is no need to change trains. JR East offers free Odoriko express trains from Shimoda to Tokyo every 30 to 60 minutes . Three pairs of trains are run as Super View Odoriko with panorama cars . The valley station of the Shimoda cable car to the Nesugatayama mountain is located about a hundred meters east of the train station .
In 2016, an average of 3528 passengers used the station every day.
history
In the 1930s, the Ministry of Railways planned a railway line from Atami to Shimoda. Until 1938 it was only Itō and the further construction of the route was initially omitted because of the outbreak of World War II . In 1959, the private railway company Tōkyō Kyūkō Dentetsu received approval from the Ministry of Transport to complete the route. Their subsidiary Itō Shimoda Denki Tetsudō (today's Izu Kyūkō ) finally opened the missing section on December 10, 1961. A 15.5 km extension beyond Shiomad to Izozaki on the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula was also planned, but never was realized. Freight traffic ceased on October 1, 1980.
